Tip of the iceburg!

This week has proven to be very productive. Monday saw the introduction to Adobe Freehand and although Adobe have chosen not to support it any further does not diminish its value in the industry as I dare say that many companies are reluctant to come up with the cash to upgrade; this means that it is a real possibility that we may end up using Freehand for some time to come.

I was surprised to see many of the same tools and facilities in Freehand as I was used to seeing in AutoCAD. Frustratingly however, they are not in the same place, nor are they as powerful as the CAD package.

We have been once again fortunate enough to have had a visitor this week. This time the appearance was from Mark Feather, an ex-student from the HND in Web Design at Wakefield College (Steve, is that what you were after? Alpha seminar class will get that one).

The work that
Mark undertakes at Empire Direct is very much different from Jonny's from Technophobia. Marks work concentrated almost entirely upon the company site and one site alone. The print work was very limited if at all and the opportunity to do a diverse range of designs / builds is restricted at best.

I think that of the two visits, I would prefer to take the position of Jonny's; however neither roll is specifically what I am looking for but beggars cannot be choosers particularly in the early stages of the career.

The A7 project is proving to be the most involved and enjoyable yet! Following semi-self directed seminar class today we have found that our logo's still have a long way to go. It is understandable that we are to be making errors / less than perfect designs as this is for a lot of us the first time that we have undertaken work like this. Even though the work that I have done so far is less than fantastic, I feel confident that it will all come together as I learn more of what is expected and to what level each day.

This time around I feel that I am much more organised and prepared. My time planning has shown much signs of improvement and it shows in the work that I have produced so far. This is a skill that certainly is transferable into the 'real world' and will continue to develop.

Nice progress with your own website Shaun. As soon as you post up your logo's I will be ready with some feedback.

Glad you're finding the assignment enjoyable Shaun. Personally, I'm already feeling a bit stressed by the amount of work, which I haven't really felt for any assignment at this stage. I think I need to take a step back and relax.

Like Mark, I'll also be ready to give you some feedback when your ideas are uploaded.

Out of the eight logo design Shaun the only on I would develop only two of them. Design number 3 and 5 have more potential. The letter’M’ in the third design almost looks like a ultrasound pulse.

I am please that you have said that Mark; logo idea number 3 was the one that I had chosen to develop and I am open to suggestions.

I believe that number 5 makes it look almost like EM IT as in two individual words / abbreviations.

Keep the feedback coming everyone - everyone opinion is valuable!

I agree that number 3 is the strongest, primarily because of it's relative simplicity. Many of the other designs are slightly overcomplicated, or just not suitable for the company in question, I feel.

3 has good presence and weight, and it fits nicely into the idea of logos having a 2:1 ratio. Definitely the strongest of the lot, and the one worth developing most.

Hi Shaun,

Some nice scans you've got there! Of the ideas you've put forward for development, I'd have to agree with the others and say number 3. The idea works well in silhouette, has great legibility and has the potential to work in small scale.

Great work!

I would say 3 and 5 have potential for development Shaun. The concept of the soundwave behind 3 though is more subtle and strongest.

i think it is definitely worth taking the time to create all of the type yourself to keep consistency and style.

I look forward to seeing the development.

You have got a range of different logo and they are all good. Out of the 8 logos, I think number 3 would be best, as it is clear what all the letters are mean to be and it is not similar to any other companies logo.

Hi Shaun

I think logo 3 would be best it shows the differ between light and dark side of ambient music, this is similar to the theme I am trying to get across with my logo. It also has lots of weight which makes it stand out more, the underlining of the m brings a bit more mysteriousness into it, however is that the same as underlining?

I would also like to thank you for the great links I really like logopond.com it is perfect for inspiration. The firebug is also good as it allows you to too and fix problems that are on your WebPages including CSS which I think is great.

Thanks, Martyn

I also think this assignment is going to be really good. I think that all of your logo designs are really good but I think my favorite one is 3. As its easy to understand and it is also a bold design making it eye catching.

I also feel much more organised and I think that this is because this time we have much more responsibility for this assignment and this means that we can tailor things, such as; seminar groups to much more specific tasks and have more control over what we need to discuss.

With regards to the logos number 3 is definitely the strongest and I think it work really well in a thick rounded font. This will enable the logo to maintain it's weight and presence.
